Tell me more about Betfair...
Betfair is the trading name of Betfair Limited, which was founded in August 1999. Unlike fixed odds bookmakers such as bet365, Ladbrokes and William Hill, Betfair is a betting exchange, allowing customers to choose whether to back a selection or instead effectively act as the bookmaker and lay a selection instead.
The first ever sporting market traded on Betfair was the 2000 Oaks and since then, Betfair has become the world's biggest betting exchange, effectively revolutionising the betting industry in the process.
Betfair floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2010, becoming Europe's largest .com IPO at the time. Since then the business has continued to evolve, launching a traditional fixed odds Sportsbook in 2013 to expand its reach in the recreational market place.
The Betfair website is excellent, although it can take some getting used to if you're a complete novice and can even be a bit intimidating. However, the speed of the site is superb and if you stick with it, you'll be rewarded not only with better value odds, but an altogether dynamic and even exciting betting experience.
Odds and markets
Betfair offer betting on a ridiculously large range of sports and markets, and when it comes to political betting, the firm have left no stone unturned.
As you'd expect, UK politics is well covered, with odds available on the next Prime Minister, as well as the next party leaders.
Away from UK politics, you can also bet on the Next President of the United States of America, the next French president, while Eurozone related betting is also available (Grexit, anyone?).
Betfair predicts!
Betfair recently launched Betfair Predicts, an interactive app that aims to show how the Betfair Exchange is calling the General Election in real time.
Betfair's Exchange has a track record of calling political outcomes correctly, the most recent example being a 'No' vote at the Scottish Referendum called as an 80% chance throughout the campaign, despite polling calling it 50/50). Betfair also correctly predicted a hung parliament in the 2010 General Election three weeks before the election date.
Betfair Predicts is available on desktop and on your mobile (iOS and Android) and uses graphics to bring the Exchange's markets to life, with an interactive map showing the betting landscape.
Betting data is also constantly compared to the main polling agencies, making it a one stop shop for anyone with an interest in how the election will go.
Anything else I need to know?
As we've mentioned, the Betfair website can take some getting used to if you're a complete novice and can even be a bit intimidating. Stick with it and you will be rewarded not only with better value odds but an altogether dynamic and even exciting betting experience. It's super-fast but you'd expect that with all the technology involved and getting a bet on is just as quick as with traditional bookmakers, once you're used to it. Just don't hit the lay (button) when you mean to hit the back (blue) button, or vice versa, especially if you're betting in-running as it can be too late to correct your error. We speak from experience here!
Customer support is available 24/7, with a Live Chat option on offer in addition to telephone and email support.
