Hillary Clinton remains the bookmakers' favourite to win the race to the White House as voting gets underway in the US Presidential Election.

The United States goes to the polls today (November 8), and at time of writing bookmakers bet365 make Democratic Party nominee Ms Clinton the 2/9 favourite in their Next US President betting market.

Republican Party nominee Donald Trump can be backed at 7/2 with the same firm at time of writing - in slightly from 4/1 on Monday evening.

Latest Polls

As recently as last week, polls had suggested Trump's treatment of women and reluctance of accepting the result of the upcoming election had given his rival a double-digit lead.

But as the race for the White House enters its final few hours, the majority of polls show both he and Ms Clinton are battling neck and neck.

Many polls give Ms Clinton a lead of between four and five per cent, and she had a small lead in Florida according to polls on Monday.

Last week, bet365 had been odds-on about the Democrats winning what is a key state, but as recently as Friday, both parties went odds-on, with the Republicans in from Even money. As of Tuesday morning, however, the Democrats were again favourites to win the state (2/5), with the Republicans back out to 7/4.

There had been a smattering of battleground polls measuring the period since it was announced last Friday that the FBI investigation into Ms Clinton's emails had been re-opened, and they generally showed a tightening of the race.

On Sunday night, the FBI once again exonerated Hillary Clinton of criminal conduct on her emails, leading to her odds shortening with bookmakers.

Prior to Sunday's development, in Florida, an NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist University survey had Clinton narrowly ahead 45% to 44%, but a New York Times Upshot/Siena poll had Trump leading 46% to 42%.

One poll of polls has Ms Clinton on around 46 per cent compared to Mr Trump’s 44 per cent, while a ABC News/Washington Post tracking poll has leading by just one point.

In another key state, Pennsylvania, regional newspaper Morning Call gave Ms Clinton a six per cent lead on Monday, while in Ohio, Mr Trump leads by nearly three per cent, according to RealClearPolitics.

In North Carolina - a must-win state for Trump - another NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist University poll put Clinton ahead 47% to 41% last weekend.

The poll led to Trump and the Republican party drifting out to 13/8 to win North Carolina at the start of last week, but by midweek they were back in to 11/10. On Monday, however, the Democrats were odds-on at 5/6, with the Republicans available at the same price - in from Even money on Monday night.

Despite some recent polls suggesting the gap had been narrowing over the past couple of weeks, Ms Clinton may have a 15-point advantage over her rival among Americans who have already voted, according to a recent Reuters/IPSOS States of the Nation survey.

That particular poll shows the Democratic nominee is way ahead with people who have already voted in key swing states such as Ohio and Arizona.

The betting had at one point last week suggested Arizona could be close, but at time of writing the Republicans are 2/5 favourites (Democrats 7/4). In Ohio, the Republicans are favourites at 1/2 with bet365, while the Democrats can be backed at 6/4 - in from 2/18 last week.

bet365 plan to offer betting on the outcome of States across the US right through the day and into the evening ahead of the election result being called.
