Ladbrokes have said today's US Election will be the second biggest betting event of 2016.
America goes to the polls today (November 8th) and according to Ladbrokes, more bets will have been placed on the outcome of the US Presidential Election than the EU Referendum, the final of Euro 2016 last summer, or The Derby, leaving Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump playing second fiddle only to the Grand National.
Ladbrokes say they expect a peak of 35 bets per minute to be placed today as punters await the final result of the race to the White House.
Company spokesperson Jessica Bridge told BetOnPolitics.co.uk on Monday afternoon: "The US Election has gripped the nation and not only is it the biggest ever non-sporting event the bookmaking industry has witnessed, just the Grand National will see more bets placed on a single market this year."
Following Sunday's news that the FBI have found no evidence of criminality in Ms Clinton's emails, Ladbrokes say punters are starting to back the Democratic candidate and have trimmed her odds into 2/9, with Trump drifting out to 10/3.
The bookmaker also reported that betting has now moved in favour of the Democrats in two key swing states - Florida (2/5) and North Carolina (8/11).
"Punters are once again rallying behind Clinton, but Trump isn't out of this two-horse race yet as nearly 75% of all wagers in the POTUS betting have been for the Republican," Bridge added.
