Bookmakers William Hill have slashed the odds on Hillary Clinton winning today's US Presidential Election.
The United States goes to the polls today with Ms Clinton the odds-on favourite to beat Donald Trump in the race to the White House.
And following Sunday's news that the FBI have found no evidence of criminality in Clinton's emails, her odds of becoming President have been rapidly cut from 1/4 (representing a 80% chance of winning the election) to 1/5 (83% chance) by William Hill.
The development saw William Hill lengthen Trump's odds from 11/4 to 10/3, representing a 23% chance of winning the race to the White House.
Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe told BetOnPolitics.co.uk: "The news has sparked a run of bets for Hillary, so we have taken rapid evasive action in case the heavy hitters come in to place more five and six figure bets like the ones we already have for her to win, which include bets of €550,000; £183,200; £50,000 and a couple of £30,000 wagers."
On Sunday, Hill's had said a £50,000 bet on Ms Clinton to be the next President of the United States was the latest five-figure bet placed on the US Election. Then on Monday, the firm reported that a London-based telephone client had staked £150,000 on her being victorious this week.
"The US Election campaign has smashed all previous Election betting records, with the biggest betting turnover for any political event, with £20million riding on the outcome industry-wide," Sharpe told us.
"William Hill alone are about to exceed a £4m turnover for the first time on any political event, and with the result still too close to call we anticipate a political bets bonanza in the closing hours of the Election campaign.
"We have already seen massive bets for Hillary Clinton – one female client has the largest election bet ever of €550,000 riding on her, another has staked £183,200 on her and at the start of the weekend we took two £30,000 bets for her.
"Two Moscow-based clients have staked five figure bets on her. A Liverpool customer will collect £49,594 should Hillary win."
According to the bookmaker, just short of 70% of the individual bets they have taken have been for Trump, but 74% of all the stake money is for Clinton.
