Bookmakers William Hill say the 2020 US Election was the biggest political betting event ever.

William Hill took £5million of bets on the outcome of the Presidential Election, but say Donald Trump's surprise win left them paying out a six-figure sum.

70% of US Election bets placed with Hill's were for Trump, despite the fact that he was a 150/1 outsider when he first emerged as a potential candidate.

William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe told BetOnPolitics.co.uk: "The good news is that betting on politics is booming like never before – the bad news is that we seem to have some very shrewd customers betting on it – and a six figure loss on this market can now be added to losing outcomes on the recent EU Referendum, the last General Election and the Labour leadership campaign."

William Hill on Thursday offered 4/6 about Trump being the Republican Party's official candidate for 2020, and Evens about the Republicans winning the next US Election (8/11 Democrats).
