Conservative Party Figures Get Suspended Prison Sentences for Election Date Betting
02 November 2026
Two people, including the former director of campaigning for the Conservatives, have been given suspended prison sentences after using inside information about the 2024 election date to place gambling bets. Anthony Lee and his partner both pleaded guilty to using confidential material to try to win thousands.
Anthony Lee, the Conservatives' former director of campaigning, used privileged knowledge from a private government meeting about the 2024 general election to place bets. The two were at a meeting where the election date was discussed, and they misused that information for personal gain.
Southwark Crown Court heard about the group's attempts to profit from knowledge of the 2024 general election date. While Lee and his partner placed bets, a third individual involved in the scheme did not actually gamble.
The group stood to gain £23,133 from their actions. The defendants received their sentences on Thursday 24 October. Judge Brenda Bishop noted that the case damaged trust in public institutions.
"This case is serious. Election dates must remain confidential for political and security reasons," the judge said. Lee's partner received a shorter suspended sentence than Lee, but was the only one banned from holding senior positions in politics.
One individual, while not placing bets himself, was convicted for passing on confidential information. "He ultimately recognised that profiting would require abusing confidential information," the judge said. This person received a £2,000 fine alongside a 4-month suspended sentence.

The Gambling Commission supported the convictions and stated that all potential election dates should now be treated as confidential information.
The judge barred Lee and his partner from political management roles for three years, noting that despite the relatively short sentences, the case carried serious implications for both politics and public confidence in institutions.
Background to the case
The investigation began when unusual betting patterns were detected surrounding the announcement of the 2024 general election date. Authorities traced the bets back to individuals with access to confidential government discussions.
Legal experts suggest this case may establish important precedents regarding the misuse of privileged political information for personal gain, particularly in gambling contexts.
