Hillary Clinton remains the bookmakers' favourite to win the US Presidential Election, but polls suggest the race to the White House remains tight as America prepares to votes for its next President.

The United States goes to the polls today and at time of writing, bookmakers bet365 make Democratic Party nominee Ms Clinton the 2/9 favourite in their Next US President betting market.

Republican Party nominee Donald Trump can be backed at 7/2 with the same firm at time of writing.

As recently as last week, polls had suggested Trump's treatment of women and reluctance of accepting the result of the upcoming election had given his rival a double-digit lead.

But polls over the past week had suggested the gap is closing, while bookmakers have reported strong support for Trump since last weekend, with one shortening his odds to win the US Presidential Election for the ninth time in a fortnight on Friday morning.

However, British bookmaker Ladbrokes on Saturday said punters were "regaining confidence" in Ms Clinton to enter the White House, making her 1/3 and pushing Trump out to 9/4 (from 15/8).

Then following Sunday's news that the FBI have found no evidence of criminality in Ms Clinton's emails, her odds of becoming President were rapidly cut from 1/4 (representing a 80% chance of winning the election) to 1/5 (83% chance) by William Hill.

The development saw William Hill lengthen Trump's odds from 11/4 to 10/3 on Monday, representing a 23% chance of winning the race to the White House.

Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe told BetOnPolitics.co.uk: "The news has sparked a run of bets for Hillary, so we have taken rapid evasive action in case the heavy hitters come in to place more five and six figure bets like the ones we already have for her to win, which include bets of €550,000; £183,200; £50,000 and a couple of £30,000 wagers."

Ladbrokes spokesperson Jessica Bridge added: "This two-horse race isn't over yet."
